At first listen, Black Rainbow is easy on the ear. Well-crafted melodies, timeless guitar band sound, Brett's voice which over the year has matured and retains an unusual timbre. But of course a Brett Anderson album or an album with Brett Anderson writing lyrics will have some uneasy themes in it. I like the recurrent metaphores relating to paper that wander between songs and this gives the album the feel of a narration. Not quite a short story because a collection of songs needs to have each song standing on it own, not an anthology of poems because songs are multidimensional and the music adds what words imply. Even so, some phrases are particularly emotionally charged.

and it feels like jealous rage setting the clothes alight
all our horses have been shot..
the silence in your curse...
your appetite for war...
actors on a burning mattress...
a spade to destroy her...
now that fear is all the rage, now that hate is on the page...
burns caressed by salt...
we'll build a funeral pyre here...
...and we'll blow ourselves away...
you burned me
do i follow where you go still suffering

mostly from the exiles, this must be where it ends, actors, in the house of numbers, thin men dancing.

the recurring theme of a character with a love so violent that it makes the narrator suffer and long for escape... or desperate measures. if you add Brittle Heart in the mix then you get a story of a character who is trying so hard to please this belle dame sans merci and all he gets is mental anguish and bruises.

from what was quoted about the new songs, there is a hint of more stories like that. Suede have written quite a few songs where you feel that something terrible is happening in front of our eyes (animal nitrate being the textbook example of it)

I think it's brave but it can feel scary because of all the pain implied in it. As a bystander you may feel strange, and hope that all this is deeply rooted in fiction because you know perfectly that such things happen in real life too, you just hope it doesn't happen to you or near you

Unsung and Possessions feel like bookends in a way that it admits failure, the failure to achieve dreams - the dream of a perfect song or the character's dream of a perfect love echoes in the end to not being able to possess art or the loved one. If we take Isolation as a coda, a postscript, we get an image of the character feeling defeated and dejected, but knowing that like Sisyphys, there is a need to pick up the heavy stone and roll it up the hill for life continues.

And for fans it feels the same. Especially at the end of a year, in the winter we feel that things come to an end but tomorrow will be just a day like this. we will aim to please those we love again and again, and we will get hurt, we will read about someone going off the rails and telling them to go back on track because we do not want them to destroy themselves.

On a bad day, this is the most depressing album you will hear. In the same league as music by Nico or Joy Division. How, as a listener can I enjoy this. The answer is that you don't. You accept that it is a drama like many dramas you know in fiction and realise that while it's nice that there is comedy and light entertainment, we appreciate a well-crafted drama - film, novel, song or poem, the format is not important. If you value brave writing, you will value this.

Given that Mr Brett has been vigorously servicing the needs of TWO musical mistresses in recent months, I doubt he's had an awful lot of time to amble around museums and other cultural attractions, let alone plough through the paperbacks. BUT - if his sojourn in Russia afforded an opportunity to mooch through the Pushkin or the Hermitage, I'd be interested to hear about it.
Equally, if anyone else has anything to recommend, why not share? I'll start the ball rolling with this:

A terrific little exhibition which I've visited twice.

Must go now - presents to wrap, chocolate truffles to consume etc.

This song sounds more Brett Anderson solo than Suede, and it is the best song of the bunch.

I appreciate that Suede probably means more big bucks in terms of gigs and all that shit, but you can clearly tell where the artist is, and isn't, on these new songs. 'The Only' is fucking awful, in my view, and sounds like Brett Anderson trying to shove himself through a Kings of Leon shaped XFM filter...

I think 'Brittle Heart' is quite a tasteful combination of these tracks;

'Rise' - P.I.L (the drums really)

'Cities in Dust' - Siouxsie And The Banshees (the singing)

'Union City Blue' - Blondie (the 'power, passion' bit).

Now this may seen slightly biased this thread but I genuinely highly rate this album.

A good friend of mine, Howard Timberlake, has just released his solo record, all by himself.

Now available via iTunes, bandcamp et al. This album is brilliant if you like folky rock, normal rock or just good singer-songwriters and good tunes with melody!

Please go check it out, and if you like it it's only £6 for the whole album!

Working Man is a fantastic tune.
