Ultrasound are reuniting for a couple of very low key gigs in september. All 5 original members. They're playing at the Lexington in London on the 9th, and at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on the 10th september. Tickets are £7.50 for London and only a fiver for Leeds, available at seetickets.com.

I've waited more than 10 years for this to happen, and will be going to both!

Apparently there's a new album in the works as well.

More info on the London gig:

I ordered a vinyl LP "Becoming a Jackal" by Villagers (aka Connor O'Brien). I saw him play live at the Scala supporting Fyfe Dangerfield last January and I'm looking forward to see him play in Belfast in September.

He is from Dublin, and mainly plays on the acoustic guitar. His lyrics are far from being twee and certainly very poetic. As with Fyfe Dangerfield, there are great melodies combined with a beautiful voice.

The Mercury nomination is well deserved.

I very very rarely buy new vinyl LP but his music will go well with the handful of records I have. And I'm always pleased to support releases by Domino Records who over the past years have had excellent bands.

Check him out.

ALEX 'HURRICANE' HIGGINS - R.I.P (9 replies)

It's with more than a little sadness that I read about the passing of Alex Higgins today. I spent a disproportionate and probably unhealthy amount of my formative years scuttling around the green baize in countless dark, often wonderfully atmospheric Snooker Halls, the length and breadth of North London. Higgins was, for me, as for hundreds of thousands of others, the key inspiration.
The first real impact Higgins made on me was, ironically, during a match he lost - the 1980 World Final, to Cliff Thorburn. I was mesmerised, not only by his gung-ho, attacking, spirited style of play (which I didn't fully comprehend at the time) but also by his fraught, anxiety-ridden demeanour and the sense of tight-rope walking danger which he exuded and evoked. He remains, to this day, one of the most charismatic individuals I could ever wish to see or meet.
As my game progressed and I started to make regular 'breaks' in the eighties, nineties, and finally in the hundreds, I developed a more comprehensive understanding of just why the man was (and is still) considered a 'genius' in his chosen field...his Snooker was imaginative...creative...unorthodox. Under the severest pressure he could make the seemingly impossible manifest, right before your eyes. He had un uncanny ability to 'read' the table and the position of the balls as well as the guts to pull a an apparently hopelessly 'lost' match from the fire. Pure, undiluted, Sporting magic.
Over the years, I watched his skills diminish, his world-beating prowess wane and his reputation take a battering. All this time I was painfully aware that this protracted downfall was largely of his own making. Yes, he was exploited and very much "sinned against" but Boy, he knew how to Sin too.
One day I'll find my own way to the grave, but until that day, I'll never forget meeting my old hero, bathed in the light of Table One, in a club in Barnet's High Street. He'd been 'prepped' to expect his "number one fan" and I vividly recall his first words to me..."OK, Andy, get your cue out". Over the course of the next two nights I witnessed exactly what I'd come to expect; moments of blinding, innovative Snooker, hilarity, charm, wit, courtesy...and vile, foul-mouthed obnoxious, beligerent aggression. It struck me at the time that certain people (one of them a disgruntled no-hoper in the lower ranks of the Professsional game) did their level best to goad the 'fallen idol' and provoke 'an incident'.
I was also there at Alex's last game at the Crucible Theatre and it was with a little bit of stupid pride that I saw him holding my "Good Luck" card at his televised Press Conference.
Thank you Alex for the endless hours of thills and inspiration. Any Sport that can claim it possesses a such a compelling, fascinating figure is blessed indeed.

some nebulous news for you regarding the next opus. we've reached the next phase and the songs are pouring out like honey . we spent the last couple of weeks recording vocals and doing monitor mixes and have two good handfuls of tracks pretty much finished bar fine tuning and mixing. it's going to be a really dynamic record... everything was pretty much played live and you can really feel the energy. favourite tracks?... there's this huge, anthemic beast called 'Unsung', a pounding kind of Krautrock thing called 'Brittle Heart' , a damaged and desperate tale of entanglement and obsession called ' This Must Be Where it Ends' and a bitter -sweet pop song called ' Crash About to Happen' which reminds me of 1980's indie. we were listening to lots of PIL and Siouxsie when we were recording it so it's not surprising that the album has some of those flavours, although as i'd hope you'd expect it still sounds very much like me. for better of for worse i'm kind of trapped within myself and my own style and i suppose my quest is to slowly whittle my work down into the best version of that that i can.
working with Leo has again been a pleasure and a fantastic learning experience for me. he'll never take the easy option when making music and he's always looking for a twist . it's a commendable attitude to have in the powder-puff music industry and one which means that his work is always challenging and interesting. together i think we're making something special and i can't wait for people to hear it.

born and raised in Kansas until her high school graduation moved to New York to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy to try for a musical theater career though after a few off broadway shows would eventually move again to Atlanta and join a band. while touring the local spots she was noticed by the woodland arts society, a group label that promotes experimental music, and signed with them. in August 2007 she released the first of an originally planned four Metropolis installments, or suites, an EP entitled The Chase, a concept piece revolving around a character named Cindi Mayweather and the year 2719. The album -- which blended cabaret, hip-hop, rock, and soul -- was pretty well received, which helped bring the singer to the notice of Sean "Diddy" Combs. Rumors about a signing were finally confirmed in March 2008, when Diddy announced Monáe as the newest member of his Bad Boy label. Monáe promised that the move was not going to compromise any of her artistic integrity or creativity. A re-release of The Chase, featuring bonus content, appeared in August 2008, while the second and third suites of Metropolis were issued together as components of 2010's The ArchAndroid.
