Most of our knowledge is self-taught anyway. If you are interested in a subject matter, you can dip into it, have a look around and find out stuff because there are specialists, dedicated people or experts who have studied this and have made it available via handbooks, catalogues and the net. If we can read the information and access it, then it is easy to find out more about things.

In the era of photographing so easy at hand to everyone, it's interesting and thought provoking in itself that someone takes the effort of creating such realistic paintings to present their target in a very accurate manner. It actually makes you feel detached from the reality they are depicting, and your own at the same breath. And that is what I'd call 'arty'. [/i]

Yes, you have a point. What I like about painting is that even though they might draw from reality it's stylised.

> In regards of craftsmanship, it's solid and
> figurative, some of his stuff is decorative but
> there is not really anything arty about that
> painting.

> I just
> really don't feel that paintings have to be
> analysed and explained, either you like them or
> you don't and that's pretty much all I need to
> know.

Ditto for that one. There's nothing wrong in analysing or explaining paintings or any other works of art. But neither it's less worthy to just enjoy them, get inspired by them and let them bring you to another place.
